Dr. Fisher grew up in Winter Park, Florida. His father was a physician and his mother a nurse, so a career in medicine seemed a natural choice. After graduating magna cum laude from Duke University, Dr. Fisher attended Duke University School of Medicine where he finished in the top of his class. Dr. Fisher received his training in Ophthalmology at the world renowned Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia. The residency training program at Wills is consistently ranked in the top three training programs in the nation. While at Wills, Dr. Fisher, along with the other members of his class authored the first edition of the Wills Eye Manual, a reference work that has gone on to become the bestselling selling book in Ophthalmology.
In his professional career, Dr. Fisher was a founding partner and Medical Director of the Eye Center of North Florida in Panama City, Florida. He performed the first LASIK surgery in Bay County, Florida in 1995, and has since performed over 50,000 LASIK procedures. Dr. Fisher also maintains a busy refractive cataract surgery practice, utilizing advanced laser surgery and state of the art lens implants to lessen or eliminate the need for glasses after cataract surgery. Dr. Fisher is also an experienced user of phakic intraocular lenses, and was the first to implant the EVO ICL in the state of Florida.
Dr. Fisher is also actively involved in providing surgical eye care to those in need. He helped establish and has been recognized by the Flying Samaritans as the founder of the surgical eye clinic in Tecate, Mexico. He is also an active volunteer with the EyeCare America program of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
Dr. Fisher is an experienced clinical researcher, having helped develop many of the advanced technologies used by eye doctors throughout the country and the world today. He is a highly sought after speaker, and devotes time to teaching other physicians, as well as acting as a consultant to industry. Dr. Fisher was an early adopter of both intraoperative wavefront aberrometry and femtosecond laser assisted cataract surgery, and conducted important research on both technologies. His practice in Florida had the first LenSx laser in Florida, where Dr. Fisher performed the first commercial procedure in the state following FDA approval. Dr. Fisher has been an active researcher, utilizer, and supporter of many of the advanced technology IOLs in use today. He has published his clinical results in numerous peer reviewed journals and presented his experience regularly at national meetings.
As Medical Monitor for ReVision Optics, Dr. Fisher assisted in the continuing development of the Raindrop corneal inlay for presbyopia. During his tenure with the company, Dr. Fisher helped develop new utilization methods for the technology and worked directly with developing and implementing investigative protocols to support these new applications. During his ongoing tenure at Ziemer NA, Dr. Fisher has assisted in the development of new technologies along with the refinement of existing platforms. He is currently overseeing a global study of an important new procedure utilizing novel applications of the company’s technology with the goal of obtaining FDA approval for the procedure. During his tenure at ReVision Optics, AcuFocus, and Ziemer, Dr. Fisher has traveled throughout the world, in support of planned or ongoing research and clinical development.
In June of 2023, Dr. Fisher relocated to Birmingham, Alabama and joined one of the leading practices in the region, VisionFirst Eye Center. There he continues his active clinical, research, and consulting activities.
Outside of the office, Dr. Fisher enjoys spending time with his wife and children. He is also a licensed pilot, having flown nearly 2000 hours, and holds an instrument rating. He also enjoys hiking, tennis, boating, and spending time at the lake and the beach.
